Cyberspace in the contemporary world.

The question we all start with is what is cyberspace? How does cyberspace fits in with the contemporary world? How are we a part of it? And how do we define it, the main definition of cyberspace comes from William Gibson`s book Neuromancer from 1982, where he defined cyberspace as a world linked together in and with computer systems.

Today cyberspace is used to explain the physics of the web, and the thought world. Something that is illustrated by sending files and downloading files from the web (that is the physics part), and when you meet other people online (that is the thoughts world). It is opening new doors. This space is narrowing down the borders between us, and making the world smaller and smaller, with every blogger, technology is such a huge part of our everyday lives. A way to explain and how it is evolving this I found in the book of Michael Benedikt, and his book Cyberspaces first steps.
“ Advanced digital technologies, such as those that generate cyberspace hold considerable promise as a testing ground for post ritual theories and practise, in particular as conceptualized by a critical post-industrial, post organic anthropology” (h-refl 1).

Gibson’s Cyberspace is not a regular “room”/space, but a space of surfaces, images, simulating and empty signs. These spaces consist of computer-based information, and create a virtual world that evolves in the speed with the real world. This virtual world becomes a sort of a sci- fi version of the real world. Gibson called this world, the cyberspace for The Matrix.
I would say that the movie “The Matrix” is very relevant. Shortly explained, this movie is about a virtual world where the humans are being kept prisoners, without knowing it. It is as if they were in a bubble and no one is able to burst that bubble.
It is the virtual world, which is tied together with our world. You can look at cyberspace as a world in change, with changing between worlds, kingdoms and rulers, and technology. But every day an invisible enemy attacks the digital society, and the fight has moved to cyberspace.

It is when we use the definition of the physical net, and the imagine world (the thought). For instance when we send and download files online (the physical web), and we meet online (the thought world). This world is coming into our lives more and more, weird in our house, and becoming a bigger part. It is like this “our hopes for the convergence are dominating our common sense. The creation of the converge, and hence stability, we seek requires that we cease to attempt to `save` or `overcome` space and time through the use of technology” (h- refl 2)
We somehow feel that we are invincible, and that we can do everything!

Cyberspace and the Matrix is the same thing, a world where nothing is real, since everything is virtual, the difference is that we know cyberspace is virtual.
A good way to show this is through a scene, from Matrix where Neo and Morpheus are fighting, in the virtual world, weird to the system.

In the contemporary world this fits in with the fact that we are so tied, and addicted to being in this world, and are so tired of our everyday life, that we escape from that life and in to this visual world, where the sky is the limit. Where fiction, and visual rule, the politics do not have so much power in this world. We wire up to this and escape and hope there will not come a virus and ruin the perfect little world. Where life is good. An online social situation, where you create a new and better life, where you create a online social network. “Cyberspace is providing spaces where new authentic places are being created supporting news forms of community” Mapping cyberspace of Martin Dodge,Rob Kitchin (h-refl 4)

But does this make it hard for someone to part what is fiction and what is real? If they get too tied up and, can’t separate the reality from what’s not reality. Some people get stuck in this world, and isolate them self-form the real world, and there is where it becomes dangerous. “Many people do not take the opportunity to play with their identity online” (h- refl 4), some people are to tied in this world, in the book about this culture in this world it is explained like “ we have developed the belief that political, moral and social problems are the result of a lack of communication, and if we improve communication we will also solve the various problem that plague modern life” (h- refl 5)
But we are all citizens of cyberspace! We all long for a perfect world, where we create and change everything, established laws, and secure our society, and our freedom. Cyberspace is our day’s wild west, which William Gibson also mentioned in his book. It is where laws are not taken in consideration! An example of this is the case against the creators of Pirate Bay, the pirate downloading of movies and music, they were in court in Stockholm Sweden, getting there judge fore there lawbreaking actions. It is important that we have boundaries, and law in the world of web, the American Lawrence Lessling held a lecture in Berlin in 2000, where he took up the importance of having boundaries, have restrictions to follow, and not goo “loose” have a new law order for the internet.
On the same way have the establishing of filters against illegal actions online (against children for instance), the filter have not yet been able to remove this from the online world. When this type of sensible filters are established and carried out, does this create opportunity for other types of filters and censure online? National government has no sovereignty online; the web has no landline. And it is a world where everybody gets in; independent of where you are born, and what economic status you are in.

we were going to have a lecture about cyber etopia. but he changed his mind.
we had a lecture about Jason`s all everything gigantic and super lecture on how to teach yourself software!!

most of us aske for help without trying, and only staring at the screen, and not trying.! (in most cases i think he is right)

most of us have no idea on how the software realy works.
eksample, adobe flash (many programs use it, MTV for ex)
but adobe can be kind of crazy (jason said , and i quote "there is a lot of crazy crap"

a lot of things to go thru - software change.

he had a lost of diffrent steps on how to understand the diffrent software better,

- begin by figuring out what you need to do. "dont bring a tank to a water ballon fight" :) hahah
find the best software Package to what you need
(you don’t know what you need to do)
What you are looking fore.

You don’t learn software in a few days, it takes time.
Good software is designed to bee deep.
Play around with the soft ware. (open it and look!)
Software is an language, take time to understand it.

Look at the common features, you have been using some of it before, (you know about 20% of what is one it, that is common)

- Save your work!!! Hardrive space is cheep
- Save it a million times so you don’t loose your work.! As multiple versions

- But that is in fact more designed fore the people who already know the software, it is not the best options for beginners.

Try different methods, change it around, find the best way . try different ways! The exsample of looking the keys in your car, and the help come and, they try different ways, on the same time, when the first thing don’t work.

- If you are searching for help on Google, simplify you search sentences don’t use to many words.
- Find the best sides

- A good thing to do is to join forums, and ask questions

This week the theme was from the big screen to the small screen.

Stephen talked about the cinemas history and pluss pluss .

1895- the birth of cinema

Silent movies

1906- the first feature lengthen narrative (the first was australien made, and then Europe came after)

1927- talker, the movie was “the jazz singer “

1929- first all collar movie

1933 – the first drive in theatre

1937 – snow white (first animated movie)

1939 – TV (it was slow at first, because there was nothing too put on)

Hollywood startedto freak out a bit, because the tv was sudently growing (not showing movies) but news sport, and so on, and because of the war this was what the people wanted to see, and didn’t goo so much at the movies anymore. Or as often as before.

1955 – Movies on TV! Hollywood started opening there eyes towards the TV. Realizing to television

internet is a huge specter of sheering the message we want to give, and we can find, almost anything online now.

what was talked allot about in the lecture was the use of shot (the shot size)

Also went thru the photos, and explained about them, and the meaning. That helped me more to understand what we did in the tutorial on Wednesday.

It’s the film makers building box, it is important also for static image, framing and position

It is all about the communication, talking whiteout talking, understanding thru the shots of film photos. Shot as words . the thing we have to ask.
Way to answer a question 6 questions we have to ask.
Who? who is the movie about (close up) answer that. Too see who the character is, and better understanding of that person.
What? What is our character doing? (mid shot) see in content what the character is doing. The characters understanding + series of action. The plot of the movie.
Where? Where is the story taking place? Location (its all about the location). The people, the location and the place where there in! establishing shot problem to overcome, a reason for the story. the location where the shot is taken. Type of content. Series of shot (mid shot)
When? Time, close up of a clock. And the wide shot. Time can be a difficult thing to captureon the screen (verity of way to do it) The audience can make time and place sense. There is many aspects that has to fit in. like the time, which year is it, present or the past. And equality of status , thing like girls in uni. The erea of the shot, foreksample the cars the clothing and so one.
Wide shot , the set up. Make it in a way so the audiene understand how long it takes.
The pasing of time and what it meant to our characters
Our character is our subjects. There movement, how long it will take to reach there destination
Why? Can be difficult, tied to a character (hidden from the audience).
Static images. Single medium close up
The big close up, find out in the end ( you can not know the ending in the beginning, then you don’t need to watch the movie.
That can be answered whit a close up of a subject .
How? What\how answer how a person is allows us to see the person (get to know the person).
How something is done\ different setups. How the characters overcome obsticals in there way.

Having a look at films and television, sitting down and watch something , whit an eye to these questions ( and write about that in our blog)

7. Why do phone numbers in Hollywood films start with '555'?
CODE 555 AND THE MOVIES

Ever noticed that phone numbers given in American movies and TV shows invariably start with the 555 prefix? Ever wondered why 555 and not something else?

The answer lies 30 years ago or more when the use of exchange names as part of the telephone number was still popular in the USA. Dials had letters as well as numbers and the first 3 letters of the exchange name were dialled followed by numbers. An example might be CENtral 78978. You dialled CEN 78978 or, using all numbers, 236 78978.

It so happened that 5 on the dial corresponded with J K and L and you can’t make any English place names using any combination of J, K and L as the first 3 letters. So the 555 code was allocated to service levels such as Directory Assistance, Operator, Repair Service, etc.

Due to the "low fill" of the 555 code, Hollywood was encouraged to quote 555 numbers in their productions to prevent real subscribers being harassed by members of the public trying out the numbers quoted on the screen. Generic and satirical advertisements and commercials often used 555 numbers. In the early days of exchange names the prefix KLondike-5 was used as this exchange did not exist.

Of course, there was a 555 code in each city (or each locality with its own area code). Therefore there were a lot of 555 codes around the USA being under-used. And with the advent of long distance dialling, anyone could call anywhere by adding an area code to the 555 number.

Now the 555 code in the USA is starting to fill up with various Service Providers demanding numbers in this range. The commonly used 555-1212 for Directory Assistance is being joined by a wide range of numbers for a wide range of uses. Only 555-0100 to 555 0199 (100 numbers) has been set aside by Bellcore for Hollywood and entertainment fiction. Modern movies should only use this range - we shall have to watch and see.

In Australia there is no special level for movies and TV. Any number quoted in the media may be a real subscriber in some city or town. The chances are that if someone rings a ‘fictitious’ number quoted on the screen, they will get a real subscriber.

The 555 code is alive and well and in use in the Balmain area of Sydney and somewhere in the suburbs of Melbourne but not in the other capitals. It would be that 555 is valid in many country areas being a prefix of 55 plus the thousand digit of 5 (e.g. 55 5XXX). But then, with the recent re-numbering, everything has changed. 555 has become 9555 in Sydney and Melbourne and in the country, there are 2 new digits ahead of the 55.

The ECU gets right in and shows extreme detail.

You would normally need a specific reason to get this close. It is too close to show general reactions or emotion except in very dramatic scenes

Wide Shot (WS)

In the wide shot, the subject takes up the full frame. In this case, the girl's feet are almost at the bottom of frame, and her head is almost at the top. Obviously the subject doesn't

take up the whole width and height of the frame, since this is as close as we can get without losing any part of her. The small amount of room above and below the subject can be thought of as safety room — you don't want to be cutting the top of the head off. It would also look uncomfortable if her feet and head were exactly at the top and bottom of frame.

As with most shot types, the wide shot means different things to different people. However the wide shot seems to suffer more from varying interpretations than other types. Many people take the WS to mean something much wider than our example, i.e. what we would call a very wide shot.

Mid Shot

The mid shot shows some part of the subject in more detail, whilst still showing enough for the audience to feel as if they were looking at the whole subject. In fact, this is an approximation of how you would see a person "in the flesh" if you were having a casual conversation. You wouldn't be paying any attention to their lower body, so that part of the picture is unnecessary.

The MS is appropriate when the subject is speaking without too much emotion or intense concentration. It also works well when the intent is to deliver information, which is why it is frequently used by television news presenters. You will often see a story begin with a MS of the reporter (providing information), followed by closer shots of interview subjects (providing reactions and emotion).

As well as being a comfortable, emotionally neutral shot, the mid shot allows room for hand gestures and a bit of movement.
